More Wilt buildings inspected
Modified: Wednesday, Aug 12th, 2009

GLOBE — Last Friday, the City of Globe and the Globe Fire Department conducted another round of inspections on buildings owned by Dr. Glenn Wilt. Three buildings along Broad Street were looked at: the old Kim’s Taekwondo building, the Jackson Hewitt office, and the vacant building that once housed D&G Games.

Globe Fire Marshall Joe Bracamonte reported that aside from excess storage at the old Kim’s Taekwondo, only minor fire code violations were found in the three buildings he inspected last Friday. Also, Dr. Wilt was given some things to work on regarding the property code. The property code deals with the appearance of buildings: things such as broken or boarded up windows, weeds, or chipping paint. The City of Globe building inspector who would look at things like electrical systems was tied up in a meeting and couldn’t make the last round of inspections.

Also, one other Wilt-owned structure has been inspected since the East Globe School and the Elks building were first looked at several weeks ago. The Hill Street building near Globe High School was inspected (it’s the building that houses the skating rink).

Fire Marshall Bracamonte found that the sprinklers in the Hill Street school needed some updating, and there were property code issues such as broken windows that allowed pigeons to get inside, and excessive weeds.

The good news for the Globe is that Dr. Wilt is complying with the correction orders so far. He has hired movers to remove excess storage from the Elks building, and has hired an electrical contractor to work on that building’s wiring. Dr. Wilt has also hired a company from Tucson to come up and check the sprinkler systems at Hill Street School and East Globe.

The city and fire department have good reason to want Dr. Wilt’s buildings to be up to code. In 2005, the fire in downtown Globe that burned down the old movie theater began in a building that Dr. Wilt owned. Globe Fire Marshall Joe Bracamonte reported that no citations or action was taken against Wilt regarding that fire because the cause of the fire was undetermined. The building was so badly damaged that the cause of the blaze couldn’t be ascertained.

Bracamonte said that he’s periodically checking in on the buildings he inspected earlier to make sure that the work to correct the problems is progressing. City and fire officials will be meeting this week to determine the next steps regarding Dr. Wilt’s buildings. The Silver Belt will stay with this ongoing story.
