Posted

A lifelong resident of the Globe-Miami area, Barbara “Darlene” Smith, age 83, passed away peacefully in her home on Oct. 8, 2023, surrounded by family.

Darlene was born Nov. 12, 1939, in Coolidge, Arizona. Darlene was fairly shy, and while working at the B3K drive-in diner in Miami, she met the man of her dreams, Garry Smith. He swept her off her feet. Shortly thereafter, they got married in Lordsburg and were married for 57 years, until Garry passed away in 2015. Together they were blessed with three daughters, Barbara Elack, Pam Angal and Ginger Lavin; nine grandkids; and 29 great-grandkids.

Darlene is preceded in death by her husband Garry Smith, her daughter Pam Angal, her parents Clyde and Rhoda Shott, mother Marguerite Wilson, brothers Floyd Scalph and Clyde “Buddy” Shott, parents-in-law Richard and Mildred Smith, and sister-in-law Carolyn Dalley.

Darlene was retired from Cobre Valley Community Hospital, where she worked for nearly 35 years as the ward clerk at the nurses station. Darlene loved her job, meeting and helping people. She was the kindest woman you could ever meet.

Darlene was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held several callings. She was also a member of the PTA at school. She volunteered herself for almost everything that involved her daughters.

Darlene loved decorating her house for every holiday. Many people knew where the Smith house was in Claypool during the holidays, as she and Garry would go above and beyond with the decorating. Darlene will be truly missed.

Services for Darlene Smith will be held Nov. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Mormon Church in Claypool.
