Posted

John Richard Herrera, Sr. passed away on Nov. 4, 2023, in Miami, Arizona, at the age of 89. John was born in Miami on Feb. 28, 1934, to Eduardo and Matilde Herrera. He was the youngest of 10 children. John went into the Air Force at the age of 17, where he served in the Korean War. Shortly after returning he met the love of his life Virginia Herrera (neé Guadiana). They married on June 2, 1957, and together had one son, John Richard Herrera Jr., and two daughters, Eileen (Kenneth Moore) and Debra (John Goebel). They made their home and raised their family in Miami, where they remained until John’s passing.  John and Virginia shared seven grandchildren (Erin, Cassie, Matt, Jack, Eilishe, Isabelle and Genny) and three great-grandchildren (John, Halen and Olsen), with two more on the way.

John enjoyed traveling, spending holidays and vacations with their friends and family. He worked as a machinist and shop foreman at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company for over 30 years, retiring in 1994. He also retired from the military in 1974 with 23 total years, six active-duty Air Force and 17 as a reservist. He owned an HVAC business serving the community for many years.

John seemed happiest with a cup of coffee in his hand fishing, playing washers, cards, or just talking and enjoying his family. He loved being outdoors and camping when he was younger. He was always willing to help neighbors or family members and was quite adept at troubleshooting and fixing just about anything. He enjoyed watching and playing sports with his children and grandchildren. Despite a busy work schedule, he always found time to attend school events and spend time with his family. He volunteered with Little League, and was a member of the VFW, Knights of Columbus and other organizations.  He developed in his children a strong belief in God, self-confidence and love of family and friends.  John loved animals, especially family pets, and was particularly attached to his special dog, Barney. John was a wonderful husband, incredibly patient father, adoring grandfather, uncle, compadre, brother and friend to many. He was very loved and will be deeply missed. May he rest in eternal peace.
