Michael Howell, 76, died Oct. 29 at his home in Globe. Born in Central Heights to Marvin and Nell (Roper) Howell, Michael graduated from Miami High School in 1965.

He joined the Army; he was a decorated Vietnam veteran, earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After his honorable discharge, he earned multiple degrees from the University of Arizona. In the 1970s he was a teacher and coach in Tucson, before moving home to work at Inspiration Copper and later Cyprus Copper as a safety engineer. He returned to teaching and finished his career at Globe High School.

Active in the fire service, he spent many years as a volunteer firefighter and chief of the Central Heights Fire Department. He was a member of the Globe-Miami Gun Club, Elks Club, American Legion Auxiliary and National Rifle Association. An avid outdoorsman, Michael enjoyed four-wheeling, hunting and camping. Spending time with family and friends was his greatest joy. And there was always Vi, and later Nora Beth, his faithful German shorthair dogs, to keep him company in his office.

He is survived by his long-time life partner Ellen Kretsch; two children, Christopher (Jessica) of Miami Gardens, and Elizabeth (Joe) of Globe; his sister, Cindy Nowell (Terry) of Globe; five grandchildren; a niece and grandniece; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Nell. Services will be Saturday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at Lamont Mortuary of Globe. The family suggests contributions to the Globe-Miami Gun Club, PO Box 356, Miami, AZ 85539.
