New Habitat breaks ground

GLOBE -- Thunder clouds blowing overhead didn't deter the Globe Miami Habitat for Humanity from breaking ground for its seventh house Sunday afternoon.
The site, on upper Pinal Creek Road in Globe, didn't look like much as the small crowd gathered around. There was some ribbon strung along a few stakes and a single front door to symbolize the project.

Gila County horse races canceled this year

GILA COUNTY -- Fans of horse racing will be disappointed this year to hear that many of the racing events have been canceled due to the state of Arizona's budget cuts.

BHP mine encroaches on 27 acres of Tonto Forest land

Prison to add stand by power units

The Golden Valley medium security private prison at Kingman, where three violent inmates broke out on July 30, is adding stand by electrical power units.

One bidder owns Kingman prison where breakout occurred

The Arizona Department of Corrections has confirmed that any decisions over bids submitted by four companies to build private prisons here in our state have been delayed because of security issues raised about a privately operated prison in Kingman last month where the breakout of three violent convicts occurred on July 30.

No improvement until 2011
Arizona jobless rates still high

New figures released by the Arizona Department of Commerce show the unemployment rate in Gila County last month increased to 10.7 percent from 10.4 percent while statewide for the third month in a row the jobless rate remained at 9.6 percent during July.
The new data also showed Arizona lost 16,000 farm jobs last month.
