GLOBE — The historic Elks building in down town Globe, at 171 W. Mesquite St., has reached a horrific state of decay in recent years, causing it to become a safety hazard for individuals walking in the proximity of the building. City Building Inspector Chris Collopy named falling glass, the potential for falling glass windows, and falling plaster as the most urgent problems for pedestrians.
The alleyway behind the building has since then been blocked off and is not accessible to the public.
Collopy contacted the businesses in the area and asked them to limit use of the alley way to just deliveries. He was surprised to hear from the business owners that they often had to clean up debris that had fallen off the building into the alley.
