On March 3, a rescue team pulls a city worker from the construction site ditch on Jesse Hayes Road. The man was transported to the Valley for further medical attention.
GLOBE — The Globe Fire Department was dispatched to the construction site on Jesse Hayes Road on March 3 at 2:43 p.m. for a report of people trapped in a trench. Arriving units found that a 30-foot section of the north side of the trench had collapsed, trapping two workers from the Spire Construction Company.

Both workers were working inside the seven-foot deep trench when the collapse occurred, burying one worker below the waist and the other worker to the chest level. The scene was secured as rescue efforts began to assure that another collapse would not trap rescuers. The rescue was slow as medical treatment and monitoring of the patients began and rescuers started to remove dirt using hand tools.

The first worker was removed and assessed on the scene and did not require any further treatment or transport. The second worker was removed a short time later and was treated for fractures and other injuries. He was then flown by Native Air Ambulance to Scottsdale Osborn Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. A total of 12 firefighters were on scene for the rescue efforts.

The Arizona Silver Belt asked City Manager Kane Graves about the two workers possibly working illegally in the country, and Graves said that the issue is “under investigation.”
