Globe — For the second year in a row, the Arizona Silver Belt has won multiple awards in the Arizona Newspapers Association Better Newspaper Contest.

Editor Holly Sow won second place in the Best Sports Story category for “On a mission to win by losing,” her article on Globe High School football player Bryan Putney’s mission to lose weight. She also won third place in the Best Sustained Coverage or Series category for “Authorized to Cultivate,” her three-part series on medical marijuana.

The Silver Belt took second place in Page Design Excellence. Newspapers had to submit certain issues for judging, and the papers were judged as a whole.

Congratulations to Sow, who also won two awards last year, and the Silver Belt staff.

This year’s competition received entries from around 50 newspapers throughout the state of Arizona, and around 1,200 entries.

The Better Newspaper Contest consists of nine categories that measure the overall quality of the newspapers and 18 categories that honor individuals who contribute to journalism excellence.

The Silver Belt competed in the category of “Non-Daily, Under 3,500.”
