Claypool — The Globe/Miami area is proud to welcome a new Boxing Club to our community. The non-profit organization is run by Keith Dixon, a long-time resident of the town and former amateur boxing champion. The newly renovated gym is located directly behind Circle K in Claypool and even though it has just started, the program has already brought in a lot of participants, young and old alike.
“We are a fight gym, however a lot of participants are just looking to get into shape, or just further their knowledge of boxing through interaction. Sparring is not required here. We try to cater to every member’s particular needs and interests, especially our Youth Boxing team, who trains here every day after school,” says Dixon, who personally oversees all of the training himself along with one other coach.
The gym is packed with equipment for boxers, including punching bags, workout stations, speed bags and a new boxing ring. For members joining, the prices are as follows: day-$10, cardio-$5, open matt-$5, week-$20, month-$30, and one-on-one-$10. There is no restrictions as far as age is concerned, children and adults are all welcome.
“My oldest boxer is 57 years old, it really is never too late to get into it. We hope to see a great many people sign up.”
Dixon adds that he is preparing to start his session with the Youth Boxing club. The club is looking for two more youths to participate in the program. Mr. Dixon practices with the kids from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. or so everyday after school, teaching them the basics and fundamentals of the sport.
“These kids work incredibly hard every day,” says Keith. “They train six to seven days a week and step into the ring with each other at least once a day. It’s important to keep in mind though that everything used for the youth training is made possible through donations, so we’re really hoping to get the community involved and get these kids the opportunity they deserve to pursue something they love.”
