Miami Sports Hall of Fame will induct new members this Saturday, Oct. 13

Miami — The Miami Sports Hall of Fame will hold its 6th induction ceremony this Saturday, Oct. 13 at Miami High School beginning at 1 p.m. and it is open to the public.
The 2012 Miami Sports Hall of Fame class of inductees into the Miami Sports Hall of Fame for being named to the Class 3A-Conference all-state teams include: Nick Griego and Eric Ramos for football; Aubrie Vargas, Amanda Watko, Jaymie Swift and Brittney Mata for volleyball. Mata will also be recognized for soft ball.
Two wrestlers, both two-time state champions, qualified for the Wall of Champions and they are Justin Bunger and Aaron Salcido.
Several tennis players qualified for the Wall of Champions and they are Kodee Goseyun, Holly Mendoza, Aubrie Vargas, Petrita Duncan, Laura Goutcher, Jaymie Swift, Amanda Watko, Jolene Hunt, and Jessica Joseph.
This year for the first time two outstanding community supporters of Vandal athletics will receive Miami Sports Hall of Fame “Honor Awards” for their meritorious affiliation with Miami High School athletics. They are Mr. Marvin Horr who was the band director for several years, and Dr. Ira Harris a physician that attended to Vandal athletes for years.
Coach Dave Pastor and Coach Bill Johnson are being inducted into the Coaches Corner in the Miami Sports Hall of Fame for their outstanding athletic accomplishments at Miami High School.
Two charter members of the Miami Sports Hall of Fame Committee will be “inducted” into the Miami Sports Hall of Fame posthumously for their outstanding meritorious affiliation with Miami High School athletics and they are Coach Hector Bejarano and Athletic Director Mary Pavlich Roby.
Elizabeth Zache and George Maslovar will be in attendance for their testimony about the building of the renowned “M” on Church Hill in 1934 under the supervision of first year principal, Mr. E.E. McClain and industrial arts teacher, Mr. Bill Johnson. The “M” was dedicated on Thanksgiving Eve of 1934.
Three girls’ state championship tennis teams for the years of 1995, 1996 and 1997 will be recognized by induction into the Miami Sports Hall of Fame. Any members of those teams residing in the Globe-Miami area are requested to attend and call Mike Terrill at 602 885-1955.
The date is Saturday, Oct. 13. The place is Miami High School in the auditorium. Start time is 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and take part in a post-ceremony dessert reception in the Miami High School cafeteria to meet the honored Vandal athletes as who are praised for their achievements while participating in athletics at Miami High School.
