Globe — Under the guidance of several highly trained and experienced coaches, the Globe High School wrestling team will be starting off this season strong and ready to bring home some wins.

Head Coach Billy Barefoot, along with assistant coaches Daryl Griffin, Stefan O’Neil and Dan Foley, have been pushing the boys hard, preparing them for what is sure to be an action-packed and lengthy season, with more than 70 matches already confirmed.

The boys were glad to take a minute to tell the Silver Belt what they hope and expect for the year.

The returning seniors this year are particularly hopeful, hoping to use this last year to win as much as possible and further not only their knowledge, but their grappling skills as well.

These seniors are Tristen Burgett, Emanuel Miramontes, Tyler Baxley, Kyle Altaha and Isaac Zaragoza.

Tristen, fresh from a successful football season and returning for his fourth year of wrestling said: “I’m looking forward to bringing home the state title for the 160 LBS class and helping the younger guys learn as much as possible. Emanuel, who is also returning for his fourth year said: I’m looking forward to tough competition and placing in state.” Seasoned wrestler Isaac Zaragoza said: “I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can and all the meets that are scheduled. We use to have very few, but our Athletic Director and Coaches have done a great job of making sure this season will be as challenging as possible.” Isaac also looks forward to bringing home the state title for the 120 LBS class.

The four juniors on the team, Abel Contreras, Robert Medina, Daniel Ramos and Jacob Haas were equally as excited to begin the season. Abel, who is returning for a 6th year of wrestling says he’s looking forward to a “successful season.” Robert agreed, saying: “It will be a good year, I hope to have a lot of wins and success.” Daniel, who is a newcomer this year is looking forward to “learning as much as I can”.

The five sophomore students on the team, Antonio Medina, Jonathan Martin, Bryce Durbin, Tanner Barrick, Robert Hare and Chris Miller, were hopeful and determined. The boys all agreed that their main goal is to place at state this year and to bring home some wins, as well as better their physical skill.

Finally, the freshman newcomers to high school wrestling, Ryan Dunning and Jaylahn Hernandez. Ryan is looking forward to: “all the matches, practices and trying the best I can.” and teammate Jaylahn “Hopes to have a good season with lots of matches and no injuries.”

Coach Griffin who is coming back to his fifth year of coaching said: “We had a small group starting out years ago and it’s basically just fed itself. We’ve been improving every year and competing at a higher level. This year we’re planning to head up North and see what we can do there. I think that will really help our wrestlers.”

Dan Foley said: “I’ve been here for three years and we’ve grown a lot. We have a lot more wrestlers and more help from people. We’re looking forward to more events and showing off what we’ve got so far. We’ve brought a lot back from last year and we have what I think is a tough section, as well as qualifications and I think we are in a position to place well.”

Assistant Coach O’ Neil is coming into the season for the first time, recently out of the military said: “The kids are tough and they don’t give up. They’re hard workers and that will take them very far.”

Head Coach Barefoot said: “We’re coming to win, plain and simple. A lot of these guys are seasoned, committed, young men and they’ll show everyone that this upcoming season. Our program has grown a lot in the past few years, this year we’re seeing the culmination of that with over 70 matches before sectionals. We’re providing these young men a great opportunity and they are using it to the fullest to further themselves.”

The season will begin with a home meet at 3 p.m. on Nov. 20 against Grey Hills, Salt River, Many Farms, and San Carlos. The match is one of three home matches this season for Globe.
