The San Carlos Apache Tribe moves forward on Energy Efficiency and Conservation Grant

Posted: Wednesday, Mar 28th, 2012

San Carlos — Department of Energy officials met with the San Carlos Apache Tribe’s Planning & Economic Development Department on Wednesday, March 14, 2012. The site visit from DOE was a follow up to progress being made on the Energy Efficiency & Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) awarded in 2010 and funded through 2012.

The EECBG provides federal funds on programs and projects undertaken by local and state governments and Indian Tribes that reduce energy use including fossil fuel emissions and improve energy efficiency.

One of the first activities the Tribe undertook was the development of a Tribal Energy Strategy. Other activities include conducting residential and commercial building energy audits, which assess how much energy your home consumes and recommends what measures can be taken to make the building more energy efficient.

Currently the Tribe is working on installing solar photovoltaic panels on the Shelter Care located in the Moonbase subdivision in the community of Peridot. Also planned is the retrofitting of Tribal government buildings with more-energy efficient light fixtures.
