Globe residents fight to end breast cancer with every step

Globe — Mothers. Uncles. Friends. Daughters. The list of those affected by breast cancer goes on and on.

Sherri Davis and Mary Ann Moreno have embarked on a physical and emotional journey in preparing for the 2012 Susan G. Komen Phoenix 3-Day.

Like other 3-Day® participants, they understand that breast cancer knows no boundaries, so committing to raising $2,300 and walking 60 miles in three days is an important step in ridding the world of the disease.

“When my friend Bethel was diagnosed with breast cancer, I felt helpless,” said Davis. “Sixty miles is no easy task, but this is something I can do. Something I must do.”

Davis is also participating in honor of Brenda Coleman, who fought hard against breast cancer, and passed away a couple years ago, and for a friend’s daughter who is dealing with similar issues.

“My maternal grandmother lost her battle many years ago,” said Moreno, “Because of research sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, her son - my uncle - and my sister are both survivors.

“I have special friends who have been lost but an even longer list of good friends who are survivors. I am pledging my walk to all of them.”

The Susan G. Komen Phoenix 3-Day starts on Friday morning, Nov. 9 and ends with the Closing Ceremony on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 11. Walkers cover about 20 miles a day with hundreds of volunteer crew members supporting the walkers through the three-day journey.
