Recently, it seems like anytime the Phoenix Suns are brought up, the conversation always turns to the trading of veteran point guard Steve Nash. The two time league MVP was traded to the Lakers in a move that some fans are comparing to the Yankees trading Derek Jeter to the Red Sox. President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby has said: “At some point Steve Nash wasn’t going to be here. It is my job to get us through this phase with as much possible grace and dignity that we can. Also, this was our opportunity to get some new, younger players for what some call ‘the face of the franchise.’ I think we’ve done alright considering.” Obviously this doesn’t satisfy most Suns fans, but one must look long term at what is good for the team. Though an undeniably great player, Nash won’t be around forever, and why not give someone younger — someone just starting out — an opportunity at greatness? Since Nash’s trade, the Suns have recruited some younger talent and have certainly gotten their fair share for him. Among the new faces is point guard Goran Dragic, whose rising career in basketball promises to bring something special to the Suns. The Suns were also given 10 draft picks in the next three drafts.
So as the face of the franchise leaves us for the west coast, we fans must ask ourselves whether to stay loyal to the team, or was it a man our loyalty was going to? The Suns have overcome some impressive obstacles in the past; surely Steve Nash getting traded isn’t the end of the world. All we can really do is show our support for our team as they move on to a bright, hopeful future. A future without Steve Nash.
