Democrats more active this Campaign

Dear Editor:

I think it’s very interesting to realize that the Democrats of Cobre Valley have been more active this campaign cycle than we have been for many years. We started earlier, we have acquired very capable candidates and they are running very hard covering this whole county with meet the candidates events with hot dogs, meeting with labor and municipal officials, and our regular monthly meetings.

I believe we have acquired the better team and our campaign is really rolling so it comes as no surprise when republicans finally found some small detail to give over to our only local news reporting station that thrives on character assassination, innuendo and half-truths.

It brings to mind a US Senator who also thrived on character assassination, innuendo and half-truths. His name was Joe McCarthy, and in the 50s, he destroyed Hollywood actors and directors, politicians Jewish people, and ethnic leaders by labeling them “communist”. He played fast and loose with our civil rights and he created fear wherever he went. It would seem that we now have our own “Joe McCarthy” setting himself up as prosecutor, judge and jury. This is so far from our true American way of behaving.

Understand that the republicans want money and power. They have organized power to flow from the Speaker of the House, down through the politicians, the state committees and finally to the grass roots. Everyone is to fall into line and obey . Voting for the opposition is NOT acceptable. It was the idea of Newt Gingrich when he was Speaker of the House. It is patterned after the British and French Governmental structure and if we permit this to happen to us we will have nullified all the work our Forefathers did to make our system of government different and unique.

Democrats care deeply for people. We seek to level the playing field so everyone has a fair shake. Our heros, like George Washington, who refused to be crowned King, like Thomas Jefferson who pushed for the Bill of Rights, like Lincoln who refused to let states secede, like Franklin Roosevelt, who Supported Glass/Steagall which ended the depression and included the monetary reform to return to a credit system, like Martin Luther King who never gave up his fight for fairness and equal opportunity for all peoples were ordinary people who did extraordinary thinks to continue what our forefathers started.

It’s up to us to continue this Grand Adventure and not treat the blessings we have been given lightly.

We democrats will fight for health care, for a restoration of Glass/Steagall, for a credit monetary system, for jobs(such as NAWAPA the North American Water and Power act which JFK initiated and has been on the books since the 60s) which will create at least 4 million jobs. We believe in equal rights, civil rights, choice and, believe it or not, in the second amendment.
