Miami — Last Tuesday the Lady Vandals faced off against Hayden at Miami High School in a game that pitted two extraordinary teams against each other. The stands were packed with supporters from both sides. The Vandals’ loyal fans sported green face paint and handmade T-shirts to help cheer on the ladies as they battled their way through this season.

The starting lineup, consisting of Desiree Curiel, Maleiegha Ramos, Shelina Ladd, Rebecca Mawson, Danielle Garcia, and Mariah Gilmore, wasted no time in showing Hayden what they were made of. Garcia scored two points right off the bat before Hayden even found their footing and teammates Curiel and Mawson, who led the Vandals in scores for all 5 games, certainly added to the night’s action-packed match. The Lady Vandals were able to take game 1 by a score of 25-17. Hayden answered back in game 2, however, with a score of 25-15 in favor of the Lobos.

In game 3, though, the Vandals fought hard to take back the lead and with excellent saves by Ramos and Garcia, the girls were able to catch up. Despite this excellent comeback, Hayden took game 3 also, with a score of 25-21.

After some quick planning and a lot of hard work on the Vandals’ part, they were able to get back into the game, winning game 4 25-19. The victory for the night all rested on one final game. The Lady Vandals stepped onto the court and gave it everything they had, Gilmore hitting several spikes from the net, and other Vandals diving to keep the ball in the air, but ultimately the Hayden Lobos took the win in game 5, 16-14, giving them the win for the night by the smallest of margins.

Though the opposing team took the win, the Lady Vandals without a doubt showed that their hard work and team communication have more than paid off. The girls put on an excellent game, never losing by more than just a few points.

The Lady Vandals walked out of the gym with their heads held high, ready to take on their next opponent.
