The Garlinghouse family shows their patriotic spirit during Miami’s annual Veterans Day parade on Sunday morning. The parade preceded a Veterans Day ceremony and inclusive flag burning ceremony, in Veterans Memorial park.

Miami — “I’m one of the lucky ones. The Lord brought me back home,” said former U.S. Marine Lionel Rodriguez to a park full of people gathered in Miami to celebrate Veterans Day.

Rodriguez said it was hard to talk about his experiences in Vietnam and his experiences as he came back to his home land. ”We were not really looked at as the heroes of America,” he said. “It was hard to wear the uniform.”

Despite the pain he and his contemporaries endured, he sees it as part of the country’s history. “That was a part of our history we were doing for this country, whether the country liked it or not,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez turned his attention to the young Jr. ROTC students from Globe High School.
