Globe — The Globe City Council addressed several major areas in their Monday evening work session.

The blight problem took up most of the two-hour meeting. As it stands now there is a blight team that responds to problems, but they were looking for “teeth” to go after the real problems.

Councilman Mike Humphrey asserted that the city is doing all of the right things, but the team needs the council to really back them up with the worst offenders. The last resort as suggested was that after all other avenues have been exhausted, with warning letters, etc. that the city come in and clean the area and then hold a lien on properties they cleaned. Resident Rick Barela, who has been a major force in bringing this to the public’s notice, was in favor of that.

Barela has retired here to his hometown and buys properties, renovates them, and then sells or rents them. He said he has counted 82 dwellings in just a small area around him where something should be done. Some of these places have been on the front pages of the Copper Country News.

The problem is not just aesthetic. Fire Chief Al Gameros is on the blight team and he voiced concern about citizens’ safety.
