An open letter to President Barack Obama

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 22nd, 2013

President Obama:

You stated after the election results were determined, that you had not done as much as you had hoped to accomplish in your first four years.

You maybe felt the “itch” that you were not on the right path. Something was missing from your equation. May I propose the part that was missing? It is your own people’s creativity! YOU forgot to include US in your plans! You continue to hold fast to the advice your advisors have given you, that over the years have been unsuccessful.

The 95 percent of us cannot succeed on the trickle down economies to which you remain committed. Your ways will not help us in time to prevent a total implosion of our system. Right now you are floundering. You are fiddling while Rome is burning.

You need to reconsider what you want to leave as your legacy. You can continue your false goals (dealing only with the moneyed “class,” an odd word for a democracy!) and fall flat on your face as the bubbles continue to rise. Or, you could separate the banks from the gamblers on Wall Street and become a Second Roosevelt. You could put money into our own creative hands by being a second Lincoln. And you could become a second John Fitzgerald Kennedy by launching us into our future as we discover more about our universe, and plan to go to Mars.

The ideas can be translated into three pieces of legislation:

First: Pass Glass/Steagall. The original bill passed in the 1930s and started our recovery from the Great Depression, which will fall upon us again if different actions are not taken.

Second: Bring back the credit system which was first established by Alexander Hamilton. It will enable banks, which already have lots of money but are afraid to let any of it be loaned out, start lending money again.

Third: Pass NAWAPA! (North American Water and Power Alliance). This plan was initiated by JFK in the 1960s and is a system of dams and cisterns to collect and preserve runoff water from Alaska and Canada down through Mexico. Increasing heavy industry will help the East Coast recover. Rebuilding our railroads will help the Midwest and West recover with millions of jobs. And the increased water supply will rejuvenate the west.

Please STOP dragging us down further. A moneyed class is anathema to our democratic way of life. Stand up to the 5 percent of our people and restore our beloved democratic society that believes in “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Sincerely Yours,

Gayl Overgaard,

Democrat
