Dear Editor:
As a former Citizen of the Year I would like to correct a couple of misapprehensions evidenced in Mr. Marin’s comments in the Feb. 20 edition of the paper.
I am not the only female to have been so honored in past years.
There is no question that each of the nominees this year deserved the nomination, as each has contributed greatly to the betterment of the Globe-Miami area. However, I would defend the choice made by the committee by pointing out that the honoree, Mr. Gibson, has devoted 60 years of quiet activism toward the betterment of our communities.
He has never sought the limelight but the fact that we have a vibrant Community Center, Besh-Ba-Gowah Restoration and Museum, and Round Mountain Hiking Park is due in no small measure to Stan’s efforts and perseverance. Mr. Carpenter enumerated many other activities and accomplishments which have benefited the area.
I, too, at my table, was asked who I thought would receive the honor. I stated, “If there is any justice in the process, Stan Gibson will receive the award.”
