Land-swap bill gets bipartisan support, still faces uphill battle

Reps. Paul Gosar and Ann Kirkpatrick sponsored the bill to swap thousands of acres of land with Resolution Copper to clear the way for a massive mine that supporters say would bring thousands of jobs and billions in new revenue to Southeast Arizona.

Washington After hearing four hours of testimony last Thursday from various witnesses for and against the proposed Resolution Copper land exchange legislation, Colorado Republican Douglas Lamborn, Chairman of the Energy and Minerals Subcommittee, adjourned the hearing held in Washington, D.C. The next step for this bill is for the House Natural Resources Committee, chaired by Washington State Republican Doc Hastings, to hold a business meeting about the bill, H.R. 687, the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013. The land exchange is needed to pave the way for the proposed $6 billion deep underground Resolution Copper mine.
