Apache Historic Views: The Camp Grant massacre

This April 2013 marks the 141 year anniversary of the Camp Grant Massacre of Arivaipa Apaches by civilian militia out of Tucson in what was then Arizona Territory. For years little was known about this frontier atrocity against the Apache people. Recently, however, a number of excellent books have been written about this incident that was a key factor in the forming the San Carlos Apache tribal area.

To the Arivaipa Apaches, the canyon and area along Arivaipa Creek was a favorite camping place and farming area where wild foods were gathered for generations by their people.
