ALAMOSA — In a football season highlighted by a number of the most remarkable upsets in at least a decade, Boogie Romero Jr. of Capulin put together his own season highlight, winning the final regular season U-Pick-‘Em Football Contest with only three misses.
The situation makes it doubly sweet for Boogie Romero Jr. Not only did he win the first place $30 in script money this week, good at all the contest’s sponsors, but his beloved Dallas Cowboys are sitting at 11-1. Needless to say, this is the best start in the Cowboys’ history, so it is only fitting that one of their most fervent fans, Boogie Jr., also climbed to the top in the U-Pick-‘Em Contest.
In a week in which the contest had one less game (game No. 9, Houston at Tennessee, was inadvertently missing), four contestants tied for second place, each with four wrong — Betsy “Hot Lava” Chacon of Alamosa (Hot Lava is the name of her car), Joseph T. Ortega of Alamosa, Steve Shawcroft of La Jara, and José Ortega of Alamosa.
All four picked the Broncos to beat the Raiders, thereby stopping them from tying for first place. And when it came to the tiebreaker score between Navy and Army, all of them correctly chose Navy (torpedoed Army 38-3). Befitting the closeness of the contest this season, Joseph T. Ortega won the second place $20 in script money by edging Chacon in the tiebreaker by only one point.
Now it’s Bowl Bonanza time, a chance to test your skill at foreseeing the football future for teams in 15 season-ending Bowl Games, as well as casting the dice in the tiebreaker to see who will win the National Championship, Ohio State or LSU, and by what score.
