Commander Chapman, Sr. was born on May 3, 1937, in San Carlos, Ariz., to Sarah Dia and Orton Chapman. He grew up on the San Carlos Apache Reservation and went to the local San Carlos Day School, and later went to the Ft. Apache Boarding School.
After completing a few years of school at Ft. Apache, he decided to return home and enter the work force. During this time he met and married the love of his life, Delphine (Nelson) Chapman on Aug. 31, 1955.
Commander and Delphine had 11 children together: four daughters, Saraphina Dudley, Gloria Kitcheyan, Carol Magana, and Karen (Kenneth Jr.) George; and seven sons, Duane (Mary) Chapman, Daniel Chapman, Danny (Dena) Chapman, Darrol (Christine) Chapman, Darren (Esther) Chapman, Commander Jr. (Jennifer) Chapman, and David (Virginia) Chapman. Commander was a proud grandparent of 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Commander was a great provider who worked many jobs to support his family over the years. He eventually retired from the BHP Copper Mines.
He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He will be truly and greatly missed.
