Hayden — On Tuesday, April 30, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced that an investigation into the ASARCO Copper Mine theft led to 18 grand jury indictments with 136 felony counts stemming from the investigation. Starting in late 2012, DPS Criminal Investigations Division detectives began investigating a large and complex criminal syndicate suspected of stealing enormous amounts of copper from the ASARCO mine in Hayden, Ariz. Several copper anodes (blanks) were confiscated from a tractor trailer destined for California. The anodes were mined and stolen from the ASARCO mine.
Thefts began as far back as 2006 and totaled $10 million worth of copper.
