The Independent Riders recently held a fundraiser for Bobby Peña, who was injured in a motorcycle accident.

Dear Editor:

On March 23, 2013, Bobby Peña and his wife, Vicky, set out for a birthday celebration run with a big bash to follow. We never made it to the end as we Riders came up on the tragic scene where Bobby had an accident.

As we saw Bobby’s mangled body and heard him calling out for Vicky, we also heard others saying ‘Oh God! Oh God!’. We all were falling apart yet pleading with God to have mercy on him. Some of us prayed beside him and others were walking around dazed as we waited for help to arrive. After death was denied several times that night, our prayers held fast. We Independent Riders and Bobby’s family and friends were spared Bobby’s life.

But the aftermath is overwhelming. So we Riders planned a fundraiser this past weekend and gathered at the nursing home where Bobby is recovering. Many of us were still in shock over this horrible accident.

Bobby and Vicky had a surprise for us Riders as we arrived to show our support. To our amazement, Bobby walks out waiving his broken but mending body. It was a powerful and glorious moment that touched our hearts and will help up all heal.

This fundraiser was a great success in many ways. Continued love and support for the couple with overwhelming big hearts for all those who they have touched during our Christmas toy runs and community fundraisers. Thank you to Billy and Lynn Matta, co-founders of the Independent Riders.
