One of the most horrific battles fought between the United States Army and the tribal people of Arizona happened in December of 1872 about 60 miles east of present day Phoenix, Ariz. in the rugged canyon country of the Salt River. The tribesmen were Yavapais and some allied Tonto Apaches.
