New Superior councilwoman Mila Besich-Lira.

Superior — Superior Town Council woman Kiki Peralta, who is a major outspoken opponent of the Resolution Copper Mine and Oak Flat land exchange, was soundly defeated last week by the voters of Superior in the town’s special recall election.

Her challenger, Mila Besich-Lira, won by a landslide by receiving 438 votes, while Peralta had only 238 town voters who wanted to retain her in public office.

Besich-Lira is a local businesswoman and well-known community leader who has actively supported the proposed $6 billion mine by the Resolution Copper Company. She will be sworn into office as a new member of the Town Council on Thursday, Sept. 5.
