Washington — A newspaper in the Payson area came out on Thursday, Oct. 3 with the story that the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 687, the Resolution Copper land exchange bill, and that and it was on its way to the U.S. Senate. The problem is this never happened, but the report, which was on the newspaper’s Internet site, got a lot of attention here locally.
The fact of the matter is the full House vote on the Kirkpatrick/ Gosar legislation to pave the way for the new $6 billion copper mine was never on the House Calendar for action because the federal budget battle, the government shutdown and the upcoming debt ceiling continue to be the top priorities with members of Congress.
