Globe — This weekend’s annual Gem and Mineral Show at the Gila County fairgrounds was a celebration of what is precious and valued beneath the ground.

The show has been a tradition since 1956. Members of the Gila County Gem and Mineral Society were on hand at the Gila County Fairgrounds to answer questions and tell stories about their passions.

The main hall at the fairgrounds was filled with vendors displaying the intricacies of their art and display cases of exotic fossils and treasures gleaned from the earth.

Roy Trobaugh, a member of the Gem and Mineral Society for the past five years, said his group has been focusing on educating the young people in our community about rocks and fossils.

“We just want to give them an idea of how valuable minerals are to themselves and the community,” he said.
