EPA moving to shut down copper smelters?

Gila County — The Miami and Hayden Smelters may be hit again with even more pollution controls. Bottom line, it looks like the Obama Administration is on the move to put copper smelters out of business here in Gila County. If this happens, look out. School district and county taxpayers are going to be hit hard if the huge taxpaying smelter operations are shut down by the federal government.

One can expect some gigantic jumps in property tax bills, along with possible major layoffs at the copper mines and in the operations of the Gila County government here in Globe. Here is the latest which came out last week. Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold’s Miami Smelter and ASARCO’s Hayden Smelter are among six companies listed in Arizona being targeted now for even tougher new pollution controls.
