MIAMI — The Lady Vandals basketball team will be getting a new coach this year. Larry Anthony is stepping into the job, but it won’t be an unfamiliar role for him. Anthony was the assistant coach of the team last year. He worked as a Biology teacher at Miami High School for 36 years, and during that time he coached many teams including girls and boys basketball, softball, and junior high football.
“A little bit of everything,” said Anthony. He also won a state championship with girls basketball, and his previous tenure of Miami’s girls basketball team included a 56 game winning streak on their home court. But even with all that experience, Anthony said that he’s “always learning.”
He reported that this year’s team will be fairly young with three seniors, one freshman, two sophomores, and one junior. A few players to look out for are senior Courtney Canez, junior Katie Moreno, sophomore Kindra Holliday, senior Alyssa Gonzales, and senior Carolyn Joseph.
Miami got their season off to a good start last week with a 58-36 win over 3A San Tan. The Lady Vandals will also be in action this week in the annual Copper Cities Tournament hosted by Globe. The tournament begins tomorrow and runs through Saturday. Games will be taking place throughout the day during the tournament, so drop by the Globe High School gym to pick up a schedule and check out a game.
