Miami — Saturday’s Miami Fiesta attracted the most enthusiastic if not competitive of chihuahuas. The dogs came from all over Arizona from as far away as Phoenix, Tucson and El Capitan and as close as Miami and Globe.

One of the tiniest competitors was a four pounder named “Little Bit.” Although she was not quite a year old, her humans, Rudy and Essie Torres had been preparing her well with cookies at the finish line.

Little Bit had already had a taste of fame earlier in the day when she took the title for “most talented.”

Heather Heisler had her boys, Gizzy and Pokie on a string as well as a long haired diva named Sylvia.

This was the first race for the furry family who had been introduced to the track just minutes before the competition. “I’ve never done this before,” said Heisler. “Just a little bit ago, we tried it out.”

Jeannie and Brian Schoeneroald were waiting near the track with Buttons, Snaps and Stitches. “The sewing circle, I call ’em,” said Jeannie.

Stitches had been the last addition to the circle. The Schoeneroalds’ daughter had been in a serious horse accident and had her face and knee reconstructed. When a friend pulled the tiny puppy out of her pocket as a get-well gift to her, it seemed a perfect choice to name her “stitches.”

Although this would be the trio’s first race, Stitches had swept the competition by taking the “best in show” prize earlier that morning.

Still, her family wasn’t taking any chances. They planned to entice the dogs with their favorite — Cheezits. If necessary, Brian had the big guns in his pocket — a bag of beef jerky.
