On Monday, Aug. 1, 2022, Alan Hugh Binegar passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 71, after a long battle with prostate cancer, with his children at his bedside. “Big Al” will always be remembered as an amazing father, a wonderful brother and an awesome friend to so many people.
Alan was born June 3, 1951, in El Paso, Texas to Edith and Halden Binegar. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a double minor in Metallurgy and Geology at The University of Texas at El Paso. He moved to Arizona where he began his 42-year career in the copper smelting industry, working for Magma in San Manuel and then for Inspiration, Cyprus, Phelps Dodge and Freeport-McMoRan in Miami and Tenke Fungurume, Africa with job roles as Senior Metallurgist, Manager - Miami Smelter, and Senior Project Manager. While working, he earned his Master of Business Administration at the University of Phoenix.
Big Al loved spending time in Rocky Point, Mexico getting his boat out on the water and making memories with friends and family. You could always catch him on the road driving his truck to his next destination. He was known for his kind, generous and compassionate personality. His larger than life, genuine loving hugs will surely be missed.
He is survived by his children Amy and Brian, one granddaughter, brother Scott Binegar and wife Joyce, nephew Troy Binegar and wife Codi, and grandnephew Camden.
A celebration of life will be held on August 20 starting at 9 a.m. at Green Acres Mortuary in Scottsdale, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, his children have set up an annual memorial scholarship fund in Big Al’s name that will assist Globe High School students who want to pursue a higher education.
