The American Legion Henry Berry Post 4 of Globe will host several students for the 73rd Arizona Boys State Program, a leadership program that dates back to 1937, created as a Cold War response to Soviet Union camps of the time. The program, taking place from June 2-8 at Northern Arizona University, “teaches the civic aspects of citizenship in the United States, the mechanical aspects of how our government functions, and encourages participation in those government structures.” According to Post member Margaret Smith, a former Marine who has overseen the program for 45 years, two students from Globe High School and two from Miami High School have been chosen to attend. The Henry Berry Post will contribute $300 each for the boys, while the schools will contribute $150 each to help underwrite participation in the program.
