October update from Miami Mayor Darryl Dalley

Posted

I would like to thank the Arizona Silver Belt for allowing me to start putting the Miami Mayor support in the paper.

Update on our wastewater collection system construction

The contractor KG&E is making good progress on the project. They are currently working on Sunset Drive and Cherry Flats Road and Depot Hill. They are finishing work on Loomis Avenue and Latham. Please be careful when driving around our construction sites.

Every month the Copper Corridor has a meeting. We exchange information on what we’re doing for our communities plus help each other if someone needs some help. The biggest discussion was about the Census 2020. The town will need your assistance because we need some volunteers to go door-to-door to get the required data for this. If you’d like to volunteer, please get in touch with Miami’s Town Clerk, Karen Norris.

The town recently hired a new Chief of Police Israel Juarez. He has been tasked with rebuilding the police department and making it a better department for our community.

I want to thank the Miami Business Association (MBA) For the hard work they did this summer running the concession stand during concerts in the park, helping out with the Fiesta and a few other things. Their current project is making a movie night at the Veterans Memorial Park. They have painted a screen and curtains on the adjacent building where the movies will be projected. If you would like to join them, you do not need to be a business owner, but all business owners are welcome to join.

The Town Council continues to strive forward and taking care of business. In August, our Town Manager Joe Heatherly was informed by the state revenue department that we got a clean audit. This is the first clean audit in more than 15 years. This is very important in order for the town to apply for grants.

Upcoming events

There will be a Pumpkin Fest in Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, Oct. 27. This is an all-day family event. Please come down and enjoy it.

Come to the Miami Senior Center on Oct. 30 to enjoy the music of Neto Vazquez and his band Imagine. They will be playing for the annual Halloween party from 10:30 a.m. until noon.

In November we will have our annual Veterans Day Parade, Ceremony and Cookout.

In December we have the Small Town Christmas. This will be on Dec. 22.

When was the last time you visited the Miami Library? Our staff always has activities for children of all ages at the library. Do you have a library card? I would suggest putting that on your list of things to do this month, and then go visit the library. While you are there, take a look at our Miami Sports Hall of Fame.

I invite the residents of Miami to attend our council meetings. Come down and engage with us so we know what your concerns are, and you can see what the Council is doing to improve the town. Plus, you can hear reports from all our departments.

Miami High School

For the past several years I have been attending the weekly student council meeting at the high school. My goal is to get the Town involved with the high school. They are currently working on homecoming. The annual homecoming parade will be Oct. 19 on Sullivan Street downtown Miami starting at 1 p.m. The town is it allowing the senior class to build their float at our police station.

I am working with Mr. Glen Lineberry, the principal of the high school, in preparation for the annual rivalry game with Globe. Al Gameros of Globe and myself will be addressing the Miami High School student body before the rivalry week. We want to talk to the students about letting the football teams settle the score out on the field and that students should refrain from damaging Globe High School’s property or any property in the City of Globe.

The Miami High School student council raised enough money to purchase a sign for Vandals Park on Highway 60 in Miami.

The town will mount it at the park and once everything is complete, we will announce the ribbon-cutting for Vandals Park.

I invite everyone to get involved with the town because we need you to make our town a better place to live.

I again encourage you to come to our meetings, as we are here to serve you. If you like to set up a meeting with me, please contact the Town Clerk.
