Tribal Council addresses COVID-19

Posted

As the number of cases of the Coronavirus increased in surrounding counties, the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council took steps to deal with it. They set up the Tribal Emergency Response Commission (TERC) and in proclamations put the Tribe’s response into line the CDC guidelines. They have shut down every group activity under the authority of the tribe and have ordered restaurants to close except for take-out. Non-essential tribal workers have been directed to work from home or have been put on a 30-day administrative leave.

TERC has been posting daily updates (except for Sunday, March 29) in which they summarize news, tribal responses, advice and tribal directives.

Copies of the Updates and other news can be found at https://www.facebook.com/pg/San-Carlos-Apache-Tribe-Emergency-Response-Commission-2515267281822769/posts/

Searching on Facebook for “San Carlos Apache Emergency Response Commission” will get one to the above address also.

On March 28, the update announced that TERC would be handing out “Care Packages” of food to the homes of tribal members who were at home and stipulated that recipients should not approach delivery workers as they leave the food on the ground near their houses. This is in addition to the lunches sent out by the Older Adult Centers, whose dining rooms are closed.

The news from the page is up to date.

As of 2 p.m. March 29, according to the TERC facebook, a cavalcade of trucks and suvs were delivering care packages to Bylas.

The update also said that people returning from Hot Spots “areas with moderate to high levels of COVD19” should call a Public Health Nurse at 928-961-1940 to see if they need to self-quarantine.

People who feel that they might have contracted the virus should call ahead to the hospital before arriving at the Emergency room. The number is 833-361-9550. A nurse will answer and be able to answer questions.
