Vandals keep the Kettle

The Miami High School Vandals will keep the Copper Kettle for the third year in a row after beating Globe 43-14 in an exciting game that reflected the schools’ records for the 2020 season.

Miami won five games, losing only one to San Pedro, while Globe won only one of their five games for the season. However, as the game got going, the underdogs swiftly turned Tiger. The Tigers led in the first half 8-6.

Seth Durbin got down to the one-yard line and Avirum Curiel went the last yard. From then on the Vandals took control. They worked their way down to the Globe 27 yard line before their drive stalled with a four-yard loss served up by Orion Stevens and Avirum Curiel  followed by an incomplete pass and a five-yard penalty. After Jaimie Pena scored a first down Gabe Escobedo, for Miami, caught the pass and scored.

Those who look up the video on Globe Unified School District’s Facebook page will see a strange zig-zag pattern of play featuring a double fumble as Globe dropped the ball to Miami and the Vandals returned the favor giving the ball back to Globe.

Ryan Powell on one of his keepers got to one-yard from goal line but two low balls from the center and a pass knocked away by Seth Fane put the ball back into Miami hands. Miami made use of the possession to score but Coben Oddonetto was able to stop the Vandal two-point conversion making the score 18-8. According to announcer Dave Hankin the game was still a two-possession game.

Miami piled their score higher as Ryan Powell threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Chris Laughman with 11:08 remaining in the 4th quarter. But the Tigers were able to stop the two-point conversion.

After getting the ball again the hard way, thanks to the Vandals’ kickoff after a touchdown, Curiel was able to carry the ball to within inches of the goal and to make the touchdown in the next play. But Hansen’s pass went high and out of the end zone losing the two-point conversion. It was still a two-possession game according to Hankin, but Pena had a pick-six and an interception as Miami’s score jumped to 30, then 36 and then to 43 as they made their one-point-conversion with 1:37 left in the game.
