Josephine was born on the San Carlos Apache reservation, San Carlos, Arizona on Oct. 12, 1940. She went home to be with the Lord on May 1, 2022. She was born to the late Britton and Marie (Phillips) Goode of Seven Mile Wash district, San Carlos, Arizona. She had 12 brothers and sisters. Her sisters are Grace Goode and Rebecca Hunkup. Her brother is Timothy Goode. Her late brothers and sisters were: Beth Cosen, Agatha Chatlin, Burton Mann Goode, Sr., Joel Goode, Phillip Goode, Esther Goode, Eldad Goode, Mariam Goode, and Estelle Goode. She lived all her life on the San Carlos Apache reservation in the Seven Mile district.
She has been blessed with two daughters, Rose Polk and Nanette Long, and one son, Adrian Haozous. From her children, she has gained nine grandchildren. She is very proud to list their names: Kristen Polk, Skyler Polk, Timothy Polk, Jr., Angel Polk, Cesar (CJ) Dalmacio, Carly Dalmacio, Adrianna Haozous, Malik Simmons, Aaliyah Haozous and Ariel Haozous. She has one great-grandson, Trea Keith Simmons, whom she loved dearly.
In the Apache world, individuals are recognized by their clans. Josephine is Tsi des gai (White Streak on Rock) and related into T’iiskaadn (Standing Cottonwood Trees) clan. Her maternal family came from northern Tonto Apache people and her paternal family originated from Cibeque Apache people.
As a citizen of the San Carlos community, Josephine has contributed her best interest to the community for many years. She worked over 40-plus years for her tribe in various capacities. For eight years she was elected and served on the San Carlos School Board; she was also appointed as Tribal Secretary for the San Carlos Apache Tribe for four years and was elected to Tribal Council from Seven Mile district for four years.
Josephine was also employed as Voter Outreach Coordinator and Apache Language Interpreter-Translator for the Gila County Election Department for 15 years.
Josephine was often called upon by the community to serve as a Mistress of Ceremonies for different community events including the monthly Tribal Elders Luncheon. She also worked tirelessly to share the word of God through her testimony and singing Apache translation songs at wakes and funerals.
Josephine loved her family and community. She made many friends throughout the community of San Carlos, Cibeque, Whiteriver and Globe.
Lying in-state was held on Friday, May 6, 2022 at Mitch Hoffman Administration building and continued at the Goode residence in San Carlos, AZ.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at the Rice School Auditorium in San Carlos, AZ.
Interment was held at Hilltop Cemetery in San Carlos, AZ.
